An Evening With David Sedaris flyer Courtesy KGOU |
Oklahomans filled up the bookstore waiting to have their copies of his bestselling novels signed and to hear his lecture afterwards. Border's employees swarmed around acting as secret service agents, pushing the crowd back and insuring that no photos or video were taken of Sedaris.
Sedaris sat at a table with a pile of Sharpie markers and a notebook off to the side as he signed book after book. Occasionally he would ask his readers for a joke while he signed or doodled in their novels. Sedaris read excerpts from his collection of animal fables, "Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk" and from moments he had written down in his diary. Each reading garnered laughter from the crowd, exemplifying why he is a bestselling author.
Sedaris on jokes & journal entries:
One woman asked an employee to inform Mr. Sedaris that his cousin had arrived, saying that it had gotten her into concerts back in the 1960s. Other fans gave Sedaris t-shirts with his own face on it while another woman flirted despite it being evident Sedaris had no interest.
While there was no specific theme to his lecture, it was apparent that he is curious and his influences often stem from his everyday intereaction. While talking to some of his fans, Sedaris would jot down in a small notebook what their conversation had been about. One man asked what Sedaris would eat for his last meal on earth.
"Not capers and not bleu cheese," said Sedaris.
Sedaris, a quiet, unassuming man has inspired his readers through his pieces. One girl stated that it was surreal for her to be there listening to Sedaris speak. His entertaining quips on life lend entertainment and inspiration to readers to create more works.
Sedaris on a possible movie:
Sedaris will be returning to Oklahoma April 18th, 2011 to speak at Rose State Performing Arts Theatre. To read more on Sedaris. To hear what Sedaris has heard about Oklahoma check out the audio below.
